Congressman James McGovern (MA-2) and Senator Marco Rubio (FL), Chair and Co-chair of the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC), discussed the findings and recommendations of the Commission’s 2019 Annual Report on human rights conditions and rule of law developments in China. Special attention was paid to the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing human rights abuses targeting the Uyghurs and other ethnic Turkic peoples in East Turkistan. Uyghur Americans attended the press conference and held up pictures of their friends and relatives languishing under detention in East Turkistan. In addition to the Chair and Co-chair, Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-4), Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-3), and other members of Congress spoke. They all emphasized the strong role the US must play in improving the human rights situation in China.
