Advocacy Days, Spring 2020

The Uyghur American Association (UAA) and Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) joined forces to lobby bipartisan members of Congress in both the Senate and House of Representatives. During our two-day advocacy event, we met with over twenty Senate offices, representing states across the country. Focusing on members of the Senate Foreign Relations and Senate Banking Committees, we lobbied for the swift passage of S.178 – Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act. In addition, we updated member and committee staff on issues like forced labor, the growing COVID-19 threat, hunger, and other pertinent issues Uyghur people are facing in East Turkistan. We are thrilled that after meeting with Senator Todd Young of Indiana, he decided to become S.178’s 49th co-sponsor, bringing us closer to passing the bill! We are so thankful to Senator Young for his support, to the members of Congress and their staff who listened to our stories, and for the community members who joined us. Democracy in action works!
