The Uyghur American Association applauds the House passage of the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020 (S.3744) today. We are thankful to Members of Congress who steadily support our arduous struggle for human rights, fundamental freedoms and democratic values in East Turkistan (Xinjiang).
The US is a stalwart champion for human rights, even amidst the world’s toughest crises. This law is a strong tool to address the mass detention of Uyghurs and other Turkic peoples in concentration camps—what US Secretary of State Pompeo most aptly characterized as the stain of the century.
To the Chinese Communist Party, this bipartisan law sends a strong message: those who perpetrate mass human rights abuses will be held accountable. To the Uyghur people, this law is a lifeline: it lifts the spirits of a people paralyzed by fear and sorrow for far too long.
Today, we are proud as ever to be Uyghur- Americans. Today, we carry on down the path toward justice and self-determination for our beloved people. We will continue to build our coalitions in the US and beyond to advance these honorable aims.
