Statement to US Senators on Senate Passage of Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act (S.3744)

May 21, 2020

Dear Senators,

The Uyghur American Association expresses our deepest gratitude to you for passing the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020 (S.3744) unanimously.

The passage of this bipartisan legislation sends a strong message to the Chinese Communist Party: policies that orchestrate mass human rights abuses will not be tolerated.

For decades, the CCP has contravened the fundamental standards of a fair and just society. Under CCP rule, millions of innocent Uyghurs—ordinary teachers, scholars, writers, shopkeepers, clerics, and others—have been rounded up and detained in modern-day concentration camps. Countless Uyghurs are prohibited from practicing their faith, expressing their culture, and articulating their identity. Police checkpoints and mass surveillance prevent Uyghurs from enjoying even the simplest of freedoms, like a call to family or a stroll through the bazaar.

As the CCP transformed the Uyghur region into the world’s largest open-air prison, their wealth and influence has grown exponentially. This rise in wealth and power has come at the expense of hardworking Americans and our cherished, democratic values.

History will look favorably on you for reaffirming US commitment to, and leadership in, ending these colossal injustices. We will continue to work closely with Congress and partners to get S.3744 passed in the House and signed by President Trump.

We thank you again for taking bold action to restore human rights and democratic freedoms for the Uyghur people.
