Statement in Celebration of Ramadan

April 23, 2020

Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters,

The Uyghur American Association wishes you and your families a safe, peaceful and blessed Ramadan.

Ramadan is a sacred time for reflection, love, and dedication to faith and community. It reminds us of the critical importance of serving others, especially the most vulnerable, during these difficult times.

During Ramadan, we hope that you will join us in praying for the safety and wellbeing of the Uyghur nation. Millions of Uyghur men and women have been arbitrarily detained in modern-day concentration camps. Uyghur families have been separated; children have been sent away to state-run orphanages, where they are forced to abandon their cultural and religious identity. Under Chinese Community Party rule, Uyghurs are prohibited from fasting and praying during the holy month Ramadan. Despite all of this, the world remains largely silent.

Let us stand together in these times of great suffering. Let us heed the call of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to “Feed the hungry and visit a sick person, and free the captive, if he be unjustly confined” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5649 Book 75, Hadith 9).

May you and your family be rewarded with safety, good health, and prosperity.

Ramadan Mubarak,

Uyghur American Association
